Community Safety Team
The Community Safety Team, within Medway Council, has ten Street Officers covering the whole of Medway. They are a highly visible, uniformed team that exist to tackle problems of lower level anti-social behaviour and to reduce the fear of crime.
The Community Safety Street Team Officers (CSST Officers) have completed extensive training under the Kent Police Community Accreditation Scheme. On completion of this training course the CSST Officers were granted additional powers. These further powers mean that the CSST Officers now have the power of a constable in uniform to give a person a fixed penalty notice if they see someone acting in an anti-social manner, this includes dropping litter, dog fouling, and riding a cycle on a footpath. Furthermore the CSST Officers can confiscate alcohol and tobacco from underage youths and from anyone in an alcohol control zone that is not drinking responsibly.
In order to reduce anti-social behaviour the CSST Officers work predominantly out in our communities. The CSST Officers are on duty Tuesday through to Saturday from 2.30pm to 10.30pm, with rest days on Sunday and Monday.
Under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 the CSST Officers have additional powers to assist in dealing with anti-social behaviour. This includes the sharing of information with other agencies to ensure that anti-social behaviour and criminality are not tolerated. The CSST Officers works in conjunction with other agencies including the Police and housing providers to ensure that anti-social behaviour in Medway is dealt with as efficiently as possible.
Contacting the Community Safety Team
